Running Roosevelt Island

RUNemployed has written a great guide to running Roosevelt Island, if you’re looking for a new place in the city to run:

Roosevelt Island is that two mile long sliver of land, only 800 feet at its widest, that many of us have seen only while riding in a cab down the FDR Drive in Manhattan or while crossing the Queensboro Bridge. But with flat, paved paths running nearly the entire perimeter of the island, cool breezes off the river and almost no traffic, Roosevelt Island is a fantastic place to explore as a runner.

Summer Streets to Return for 2009

For three Saturdays in August, The City of New York will be closing down a 6.9 mile stretch of Manhattan streets to allow them to be used for recreational purposes.  The route will connect the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park.  The program takes place on August 8th, 15th, and 22nd from 7:00am until 1:00pm.

New York Times Launches ‘Run Well’ Training Tool

New York Times Run WellNew York Times has launched Run Well, an online tool meant to help runners choose a training plan for an upcoming race and track progress toward their goal. Fourteen different training plans are available and are based on ability: beginner, intermediate or advanced. New York Times plans to continue to enhance and develop the tool with additional features. Their Gadgetwise blog has more information about this new online training tool.

NYRR mourns the death of our beloved friend, board of directors member, generous benefactor, and fellow runner Al Gordon, who died May 1 at 107 years of age. Nothing summed up Al’s unconquerable vitality and spirit better than the advice he dispensed so freely to others: “Keep moving and always ask, ‘What’s new?’”

Some Central Park Drinking Foutains Turned On

According to a user in the Runner’s World forums, some of the drinking fountains in Central Park have been turned back on:

The West Drive fountains at 93rd st. inside lane and around 78th st. inside lane are on. East Drive fountains on the inside at 70th St. and 90th (the northern one) by the bridle path are not.
