In the News: Marathon Training Edition

Thursday, May 31st, 2007
The New York Times today has two articles about marathon training. The first article is about the trend of runners training less in preparation for a marathon as well as an increase in the number of finishers every year:
“The expectation has changed,” said Bill Pierce, the chairman of the health and exercise science department at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., and the creator of a popular three-day-a-week program. “It’s O.K. now to walk. It’s O.K. to finish over five hours. People have a completely different approach to the marathon.”
The second article discusses a specific marathon training program which requires less time running. It's called the First Program (First stands for Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training) and it's outlined in the book, Run Less, Run Faster.

“We believe the best way to develop our sport is to focus on head-to-head competition,” Wittenberg said yesterday. “It’s all about building our stars and the thrill of victory. Time shouldn’t be the focus.”

In the News: Amputee Determined to Make Return to Marathon

Saturday, April 7th, 2007
Tomasz Starnawski and Stacey Halvorsen33 year old Tomasz Starnawski is featured in this Trenton Times article. Originally from Mielno, Poland, he stayed in the United States after coming to run the New York City Marathon in 2003. Last April, while he was in training for the 2006 Marathon, he was involved in an accident which caused leg injuries requiring him to get his left leg amputated below the knee. He is currently in physical therapy and can run about a mile, but not without pain since his prosthetic leg is only meant for walking. Starnawski would require a prosthetic meant for running, which would cost $13,000. Information about donations to help him get a running prosthetic can be found in the article.

In the News: Urban Human Hounds Tracking Down the Beers

Friday, March 30th, 2007

In the New York Times Travel section, there's an article about hashing. You may have seen the chalk mark arrows on the sidewalks of New York City before. They're what's left over from this activity whereby a group of runners attempt to catch the person leaving a trail (the "hare") before he or she reaches the finish line. While they take place all over the world, New York City hashing tends to be more about the athletic side of the activity:

For Tim Reed, who hashes two to three times a week in New York, hashing in a city like Washington can require more tolerance for alcohol.

“When I hashed there, they had beer checks every 20 minutes,” he said, referring to a point along the trail where the runners gather to drink and figure out where the hare’s trail continues. “I find New York more fun because it’s more of a runners’ hash and more of a challenge. D.C. has a beer truck and does ‘shot checks’ in alleys.”

During the New York City Marathon, the hashers set up a beer check at mile 23:

“If my time is off my mark when I get there, I’ll do the check,” said Dave Stewart, a lawyer who has been hashing for five years. “It’s a dumb idea,” he admitted, but it gives everyone a thrill to see a marathoner chug a brew just a few miles before the finish.

The article reports that there are eight different hashing groups in New York City alone, but they have joined together to form HashNYC.com, where you can find more information.

In the News: Get Off the Treadmill and Onto the City Streets

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007
For the first full day of Spring, NYU's Washington Square News has an article about running in the streets of New York City. The article suggests a few routes other than the typically thought of Central Park and West Side Highway trails. The first route the author calls the "Greenwich to Greenwich," which takes you through the West Village. Another route goes through the streets of TriBeCa and ends near the World Trade Center site. The author also suggests running the Williamsburg Bridge and the jogging path within Prospect Park.

In the News: Winner in Central Park Has the Route Down Cold

Monday, March 19th, 2007
Today's New York Times has an article about USA Men's 8K Championship, which was held on Sunday. The article quotes Anthony Famiglietti, the winner:
“It’s kind of hard to run in cold like this,” Famiglietti said. “My face was completely frozen, but with a $10,000 first prize, you run.”
The article also quotes Karl Dusen, a 24 year old a financial analyst for AIG Global Investment Group, who was featured in a New York Times piece last week:
“When you lost a group and ran by yourself, you felt the wind,” he said.
Dusen finished 28th out of the 50 runners with a time of 24:16.
