Some Central Park Drinking Foutains Turned On

According to a user in the Runner’s World forums, some of the drinking fountains in Central Park have been turned back on:

The West Drive fountains at 93rd st. inside lane and around 78th st. inside lane are on. East Drive fountains on the inside at 70th St. and 90th (the northern one) by the bridle path are not.

Contintental 5th Ave Mile Moved to September 26th

New York Road Runners is making more changes to their calendar.  The Continental Airlines 5th Avenue Mile has been moved to September 26th, presumably to avoid a conflict with the Queens Half Marathon, which was recently moved to September 20th.

Brooklyn Half Marathon Update

NYRR’s Ed Fortune just posted the following reply to a New York Road Runners Facebook group discussion about the Brooklyn Half Marathon:

We’re trying to get May 30 nailed down. Promise will shout from rooftops when confirmed. Sorry for the delays on this one. We’re working on it, truly.

Upcoming: JFK Runway Run

On Sunday, April 19th, The JFK Rotary Club is holding their annual JFK Runway Run. This 5K is held on the runway of JFK Airport and had almost 300 finishers last year. This race takes place on the same day as NYRR’s Run as One 4-miler.

NYRR Calendar Changes: NYC Half & Queens Half

Two significant changes have been made to the New York Road Runner’s calendar that may affect New York City area runners’ racing plans:

  • The 2009 NYC Half Marathon is no longer listed on the calendar (it was previously scheduled for August 30th).
  • The Queens Half Marathon was moved from August 9th to September 20th, which is also the day of the Continental Airlines 5th Avenue Mile.

UPDATE 3/31/09: The Continental Airlines 5th Avenue mile has been moved to September 26th.

Brooklyn Half Marathon Update from Mary Wittenberg

Many runners are eagerly awaiting confirmation that the Brooklyn Half Marathon will be taking place on May 30th, 2009.  Sunday afternoon, New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg posted the following message to the NYRR Facebook group:

Runner Mugged in Central Park

This past Wednesday afternoon, a runner was mugged in Central Park.  From the New York Post NYPD Daily Blotter (cached link):

A 22-year-old jogger had her iPod stolen in Central Park by four young women on the East Drive near 106th Street, police said.

The quartet of black and Hispanic girls pounced on the victim at 1 p.m. Wednesday, took her music player and fled, cops said. The victim was not injured, police said.

Sunday: Colon Cancer Challenge

The New York Colon Cancer Challenge is being held this Sunday, March 22nd in Central Park.  The 4-mile run starts at 9:00am and the 15K starts at 10:15am.  Both of the races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 1.7-mile remembrance and prevention walk.  Check back here Monday morning for race coverage from around the web.
