I wonder how much of their costs have to do with the elite athletes? They gave over $600,000 in prize money last year. Then they particpate in the World Marathon Majors, which gives another $1 million to the people that have already won other marathons! Then they have press conferences, appearance fees, etc.
My guess is that the cost for the average runner is not that high, but that we’re paying to be part of an elite event. And since you’ll never even see the front runners, there’s no point to that. It was kind of in my plans to run NYC one last time this year, but I may not. Certainly in the future, I plan to run marathons that are smaller and more catered to the average runner. (Heck, for NYC you have to leave your house 4 hours before the race and freeze your butt off in Staten Island!!)
